Bassam Tariq, once tapped by Marvel to direct a "Blade" reboot starring Mahershala Ali, left that project in 2022, and it was ultimately shelved by the studio. Rather than abandon his creative partnership with Ali, Tariq channelled the experience into a new film, "Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother", a personal drama about a Muslim contract killer trying to protect his family, which he says has become the project he was always meant to make with the actor.

Set in Texas and steeped in Islamic culture, the film shifts between intimate family drama and intense action sequences. Tariq revealed he began writing the script during the pandemic, before landing "Blade", and had envisioned Ali in the lead role from the earliest drafts, even before the two had met. The film is set to premiere at the 2026 Toronto International Film Festival ahead of a general release on 25 September.
