The unveiling of a statue commemorating conservative activist Charlie Kirk in New York's Times Square erupted into violent clashes between supporters and protesters on Thursday, the anniversary of his assassination. Footage showed groups pushing, shoving and hurling abuse and objects at one another, with police present but traffic through Midtown Manhattan halted as crowds gathered around the memorial.

The 6ft 5in bronze statue, which cost around $100,000, was created by sculptor Sergio Furnari, who said he hoped it would spark healthy debate rather than division. Furnari, who was not a strong admirer of Kirk while he was alive, said he was moved to build the piece after seeing how Kirk's widow and parents were treated following his death, and launched an online fundraiser to recoup costs, offering donors an engraving on the statue's base. Despite his intentions, the unveiling saw protesters shout obscenities and make gestures at the sculpture, while flag-draped supporters clashed with opponents amid chaotic scenes.
