On Call: Boss wrongly claimed IT deleted his files, refused to learn the one-click fix
A director wrongly accused his IT department of deleting his files after he mistakenly navigated out of his Documents folder, an incident recounted in this week's On Call column on The Register. The story, shared by a reader Regomized as "Lucia," illustrates a familiar workplace dynamic in which technical staff are blamed for user error and then denied the chance to prevent a repeat occurrence.
The director had summoned Lucia to his office, furious that "all of my files have gone" and insisting IT was "inept, incompetent, and unfit for duty." Lucia found the director's "Home" folder empty because he had clicked the "Up" directory icon; clicking into "Documents" instantly restored his files. When Lucia tried to explain the simple fix, the director showed no gratitude and threw her out of his office, warning her to "make sure it doesn't happen again."
- Director blamed IT for deleting files he'd simply misplaced.
- Files reappeared once Lucia clicked into the Documents folder.
- Director refused the lesson and blamed IT anyway.
