Sam Raimi's 1995 Western "The Quick and the Dead" is now streaming free in the United States on Pluto TV, giving fresh access to what has become the genre's defining cult favourite of the 1990s. The film stands out among that decade's Westerns for its unusually starry ensemble cast and for launching Raimi into major studio filmmaking following his low-budget "Evil Dead" trilogy and the less successful "Darkman".

The cast included Gene Hackman, Sharon Stone and Russell Crowe, alongside a young Leonardo DiCaprio shortly before his breakthrough in "Titanic". On release the film received mixed reviews and underperformed at the box office, taking $47 million worldwide against a reported $35 million budget, but it later built a devoted following through home video and is now regarded as a genre highlight of its era.
