A six-year-old girl with non-verbal autism, Winter Jones, died after being left inside a hot daycare bus for hours in Cordova, Memphis, prompting the arrest of two daycare workers and the bus driver. Prosecutors said the case highlights serious lapses in basic child-safety procedures at the daycare, Kid University, which has since closed permanently and surrendered its licence following the incident.

Winter was found unresponsive on the bus outside Kid University on 13 August at around 3.20pm; her internal temperature had reached 109°F, with outside temperatures of 95°F and a heat index of 103°F that day. Bus driver Tametria Norry, 49, assistant director Sabrina Powe, 43, and assistant Amilya Hardin have each been indicted on charges of aggravated child neglect, criminally negligent homicide, and tampering with government records, after investigators found required walk-throughs and vehicle inspections to confirm all children had left the bus were not carried out and transportation logs were falsified. Winter's family, who are pursuing a civil case, say her death resulted from "absolute negligence".
