A 70-year-old man from Royal Oak, Michigan, was found alive after being missing for a week while hiking alone in Isle Royale National Park, a remote and sparsely staffed park in Lake Superior. Craig Berg was suffering from hypothermia when rescued, and the case highlights the risks of solo hiking in isolated wilderness areas with limited infrastructure and unreliable phone coverage.

Berg arrived at the park on 27 August for an extended solo hike but failed to return home on 5 September, prompting a large multi-agency search involving the Coast Guard, Michigan State Police, the National Park Service and several state agencies, along with a 45-foot Coast Guard boat, drones, seaplanes and K-9 units. He was ultimately spotted by fellow backpackers on Saturday, before police foot patrols and search dogs reached him; a Coast Guard helicopter crew then hoisted him to safety and he was flown to a regional airport for emergency medical evaluation.
