A Maryland couple has been arrested after their two-month-old daughter died from severe head trauma, with the father reportedly telling police that "Satan" was responsible for her injuries. Oscar Pineda and Katerin Monzon-Alvarado, both 21, face charges including first- and second-degree child abuse, assault and reckless endangerment over the death of baby Aida Mikea Monzon Alvarado, with homicide charges possible once an autopsy is completed. The infant was taken to Harbor Hospital in Baltimore with bruising around her eyes and jaw that doctors called "suspicious"; further examination found multiple skull fractures and significant brain trauma, including bleeding, that had not been picked up initially. While the father invoked a "supernatural force", the mother said the baby had fallen from a bed after being jostled by her two-year-old brother, but prosecutors argued a single fall could not explain injuries of this severity. Both parents admitted noticing bruising and vomiting days before seeking help, only bringing the baby in once she became unresponsive; she could not be revived. The pair, Guatemalan nationals described by prosecutors as an "extreme flight risk", are being held without bail and face up to 55 years in prison.
