Dead City showrunner Seth Hoffman has discussed his approach to Season 3 of the AMC spin-off The Walking Dead: Dead City and teased plans for a fourth season, particularly regarding the evolving relationship between Maggie (Lauren Cohan) and Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan). Speaking to Collider after the Season 3 finale, Hoffman explained that his goal was to make the show feel both classic and fresh by restoring earlier, more distinctive versions of the two lead characters and placing them in scenarios the franchise had not attempted before, such as an alternate-reality episode and a sitcom-style sequence.

Hoffman, who previously worked on Seasons 4 to 6 of the original Walking Dead series, said he pushed to bring back a hopeful, optimistic Maggie reminiscent of her earlier mothership appearances alongside an unpredictable, live-wire Negan from before his imprisonment. He described one standout episode as a deliberate experiment in tone, likening it to "a horror romantic comedy" built around fan anxiety over a possible Maggie-Negan romance. The interview also touched on his ambitions to keep experimenting with unconventional storytelling in a potential Season 4, though AMC has not yet confirmed a renewal.
