Music distributors agree to new anti-fraud measures
The International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI) has launched the Streaming Integrity Initiative (SII), a new industry-wide commitment to tackle fraud on music streaming services. The scheme, unveiled on Monday 14 September 2026, aims to protect artists, songwriters and fans from manipulated streams that divert royalties away from genuine rights holders, with the IFPI warning that the growth of AI is making such fraud easier to carry out at scale.
Under the SII, participating distributors commit to five measures: verifying rights ownership and customer identities through robust checks, vetting content for infringement and AI-related risks, actively detecting and acting against fraud including repeat offenders, sharing intelligence across platforms where legally possible, and continually strengthening their anti-fraud systems. Sony Music Group, Universal Music Group and Merlin are among the initial backers, and the IFPI, which represents more than 8,000 record companies, says it hopes more firms will sign up.
