Coachella promoter Goldenvoice has cancelled the debut edition of its Ocean Way Festival in Santa Monica after Hurricane Marie caused significant beach erosion, forcing the City of Santa Monica to withdraw permission for the event just two weeks before it was due to take place. The festival, which was set to headline The Killers and Olivia Dean over the last weekend of September, has instead been pushed back to launch next year, underscoring the growing disruption extreme weather is causing to outdoor events.

Storm surf and runoff damaged the stretch of coastline between Santa Monica Pier and Bay Street earmarked for the festival, prompting the city's intervention. A local council member noted that Hurricane Marie had also caused sinkholes in Malibu and triggered evacuations in Long Beach due to rising surf, describing the erosion near the festival site as "deeply concerning." The hurricane has been linked to a severe El Niño weather pattern, whose intensity is attributed to human-driven global warming. Other acts booked for the inaugural line-up included Jack White, Khruangbin, Alvvays and Sublime.
