CCTV footage has revealed how a routine roadside stop for driving without insurance led to the unravelling of a major people-smuggling ring, with three men jailed for more than 18 years combined. City of London Police stopped George Peposhi, 52, in September 2023, and when he refused to name his insurance policyholder, an officer seized his phone and spotted WhatsApp messages discussing moving migrants in lorries, prompting an arrest that fed into a wider Home Office investigation.

Further inquiries linked Peposhi, Irishman Philip Gaughan, 55, and Romanian Nicolae Mares, 35, to the smuggling of eight Vietnamese migrants in an HGV that reached Dover on 26 July 2023, with fake number plates found hidden in the lorry cabin. Messages showed the trio referring to migrants as "chickens" and coordinating handovers, and Peposhi was jailed for seven years and six months, Gaughan for six years and six months, and Mares for five years at Canterbury Crown Court. The case comes as figures show 3,896 disruptions to smuggling activity in the year to June 2026, a 48 per cent rise on the previous year, which Immigration Minister Anna Turley said reflected mounting pressure on smuggling gangs.
