The Back to the Future star, 65, who was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease at 29 in 1991, was brought onto the stage in a wheelchair and received a standing ovation from the audience before speaking about his health battle and initially concealing it from Hollywood.

Fox was presented with the award by his former The Good Wife co-star Julianna Margulies and was watched on by his wife, Tracy Pollan, and their four children. In his speech, he paid tribute to comedian Bob Hope before revealing he had kept his diagnosis secret for fear it would harm his career and how fans would perceive him, admitting he had worried people might "laugh" if they knew he was ill.
