Police in Sacramento, California, have admitted they had probable cause to arrest a man who went on to fatally shoot a woman he had been stalking, but were unable to locate him before the attack. Rohit Rohit, a 22-year-old DoorDash driver who had entered the US illegally from India in 2023, shot 38-year-old Shalini Thakur multiple times outside a Panera Bread on 8 September, despite her having obtained a restraining order against him after he violated an earlier one in July. The case has drawn criticism from mourners who say the sheriff's office failed to protect Thakur despite him being known to them for months.

Surveillance footage showed Rohit chasing Thakur before shooting her and then approaching her body to shoot her again at close range as she lay dying. He fled in a vehicle but was later found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound after deputies pulled him over. Thakur, a well-liked waitress at an IHOP restaurant, was mourned at a funeral in Sacramento on Monday attended by her mother, Sudesh Kumari, who lost her husband just two years earlier and was left devastated as her only child's casket passed before her.
