The family of Charlie Kirk has filed a legal notice indicating their intention to sue Utah Valley University and associated police over what they describe as "a series of stunning failures and reckless decisions" that led to his assassination in September 2025. The claim alleges the university failed to carry out a proper risk assessment or provide adequate security for the outdoor event where the Turning Point USA founder was shot, arguing that the fatal outcome could have been avoided with reasonable planning.

Kirk, 31, was killed on 10 September 2025 while addressing an audience of around 3,000 people at Utah Valley University as part of his organisation's American Comeback Tour. The family's notice states only six campus police officers were assigned to the event and argues that the threat of a rooftop shooter should have been anticipated given the earlier assassination attempt on Donald Trump in Butler, Pennsylvania. The suspect, Tyler Robinson, is awaiting trial for murder and could face the death penalty if convicted.
