A woman has been charged with murder after allegedly causing a bus crash in Los Angeles that killed two people, indirectly leading to the deaths of three more when a news helicopter covering the scene later crashed. Bailee Lynn Rios, 36, is accused of speeding, running a red light and possibly driving under the influence when her SUV struck a Metro bus, killing passengers Gage Weida, 31, and Daniel Castillo, 46. The case has drawn attention both for the severity of the charges and the extraordinary chain of events it triggered, including the on-air deaths of journalists sent to cover the original incident.

Rios was charged on Wednesday and held on $4.03 million bail, with police set to present the case to prosecutors while the investigation continues. Around two hours after the bus crash, an NBC news helicopter dispatched to film the scene went down in a nearby car park and caught fire, killing reporter Eliana Moreno, 38, pilot George Marciniw, 70, and an unidentified person on the ground. NBC colleague Robert Kovacik, who had been reporting live from the bus crash, rushed towards the helicopter wreckage on air, only to discover it was his own crew that had been killed.
