He was sacked in October 2024 after complaining that reassignment to a smaller Hyundai i30 hatchback exacerbated chronic neck pain and migraines stemming from a 2016 workplace injury. The case highlights issues surrounding employer accountability, workplace health accommodations, and the treatment of long-serving employees with unblemished records.

The council had previously supplied Mr Norton with a spacious Hyundai H1 van but switched to a smaller fleet in 2023. When he raised health concerns, his manager issued multiple show-cause letters threatening termination over 15 months rather than exploring reasonable adjustments. The tribunal member described this approach as "unfathomable." Mr Norton's two-year legal battle cost him $180,000 drawn from his superannuation, and he lost approximately $180,000 in salary after failing to secure alternative employment despite applying for 80 positions elsewhere.
