A partially AI-generated intelligence assessment nearly prompted the US military to intercept or attack a Chinese ship in the Middle East, which officials believed was carrying nuclear-weapons components. The report, based on an analyst’s query to an AI chatbot, was later found to be false, raising concerns about the risks of using AI in sensitive defence and intelligence operations.

CNN’s sources said the chatbot combined open-source and classified signals intelligence to produce the claim, although it remains unclear what the ship was carrying or which AI system was used. The incident comes as the US Department of Defense pursues an “AI-first” strategy and develops partnerships with major technology companies, increasing scrutiny of safeguards around military applications.
