Greg O’Neill, 63, has been identified as the man killed in a suspected great white shark attack at Perth’s Sorrento Beach. His family described him as a devoted husband, father, grandfather-to-be and keen swimmer, while the incident prompted authorities to close nearby beaches and launch patrols.

Officials believe the shark was more than 3 metres long and remained in the area after the attack. Western Australia’s Fisheries Minister authorised a rare “catch and kill” operation, the first such order in a decade, citing the shark’s identification and continuing threat; beaches had previously had an eco-barrier, removed in 2020.
