The case gained renewed attention following a Hulu documentary that detailed how Wendi's mother Donna and brother Charlie hired a contract killer to murder Markel during a custody dispute. Although Wendi was never charged, prosecutors alleged she was an unindicted co-conspirator; she struck an immunity deal and testified against her family members.

Wendi's mother Donna, 76, and brother Charlie, 50, are both serving life sentences plus 60 years alongside three other convicted conspirators.
