15-year-old cyclist dies after rubbish truck collision in Manhattan
Daria Serkov, 15, was killed in Manhattan’s East Village after a rubbish truck struck the Citi Bike she was riding with a 16-year-old friend while turning right. Serkov was trapped beneath the vehicle and later died in hospital, while the other girl was taken to hospital in a stable condition. The crash prompted a vigil and fundraising for Serkov’s family.
Police are questioning the truck driver, who remained at the scene, and investigating footage from cameras at the junction to establish how the collision occurred. Witnesses described a major emergency response, with several ambulances attending, while a fundraiser had reportedly collected more than $85,000 for funeral and related expenses.
