Acclaimed filmmaker Pablo Larraín ventures into Argentina for the first time with "My Sad Dead," a supernatural horror film based on stories by Argentinean writer Mariana Enriquez. Originally developed as a Netflix four-part miniseries, the project has been expanded into a nearly three-hour feature competing for the Golden Shell at San Sebastián's film festival, marking Larraín's continued exploration of genre territory following his 2023 film "The Count."

The story centres on Ema, a recently retired doctor who can see and hear the dead, struggling with her mother's death and unfinished business. When her niece Julie arrives and three teenagers are murdered in the violent neighbourhood of Piedrabuena, the boundary between the living and the dead begins to collapse. In interviews, Enriquez revealed that the film draws on real-life inspirations—her mother is a doctor at a public hospital and the neighbourhood is based on an actual location—while the supernatural elements stem from her family's own experiences. Larraín noted that working in Argentina deepened his appreciation for the cultural similarities between Argentina and his native Chile, which proved more substantial than their differences.
