Google has opened pre-orders for its first Googlebooks, Android-based laptops designed to work more closely with Android phones. Launching on 4 October, the devices represent Google’s attempt to rethink ChromeOS and offer phone–laptop integration comparable to Apple’s ecosystem, while also adding new AI features.

The interface remains familiar to Chromebook users, with the Chrome browser, Play Store apps and Google’s security protections, but Android now powers the system and Linux remains available for developers. Google demonstrated features including phone-assisted setup, automatic transfer of passwords and Wi-Fi details, seamless continuation of apps such as BandLab, and the AI-powered Magic Pointer; however, it remains uncertain whether these changes will persuade buyers to choose Googlebooks over Mac or Windows laptops.
