Google has opened pre-orders for the Googlebook, a new $899 AI-powered laptop unveiled in May, running Android OS with integrated Gemini AI features designed to drive adoption of its artificial intelligence technology. The company is betting that built-in AI capabilities—rather than separate apps or browser-based access—will convince consumers to purchase new devices, whilst the longer-term strategy appears focused on capturing the education market's approximately 50 million existing Chromebooks.

The Googlebook features several AI-integrated elements, including Magic Cursor (an AI-enhanced pointer that serves as a conduit to Gemini for tasks like verifying email legitimacy or visualising images), Rambler (voice-to-text technology that converts rambling speech into coherent text), and vibe-coded widgets. The device includes 12 months of Google AI Pro with 5TB cloud storage, Gemini Advanced tools, and subscriptions to YouTube Premium and Adobe Photoshop, plus a 10-year update commitment. However, the article notes that whilst these features are innovative, most—including Magic Cursor and other Gemini capabilities—are comparable to existing Android features and may not constitute compelling reasons for consumers to upgrade hardware.
