A 19-year-old hiker died after lightning struck the metal “Tin Shack” on Mount Timpanogos, Utah, where he and nine others had taken shelter during a thunderstorm. The other hikers were injured, while rescuers faced severe weather and difficult access to the remote summit.

Authorities were alerted at about 6am, and emergency responders attempted to revive the teenager before he was pronounced dead. Officials warned that small shelters do not adequately protect against lightning, advising hikers to leave exposed peaks and ridgelines and seek substantial enclosed buildings or hard-topped vehicles; it was the area’s second fatal lightning strike this year.
