Thomas Gigler, a 56-year-old computer programmer, jumped to his death from the 11th deck of the Carnival Panorama cruise ship whilst sailing off the coast of Baja California on Saturday. He was on holiday with his wife Michelle and their three young sons, who would have celebrated their 15th wedding anniversary four days later. His wife raised the alarm after discovering him missing, prompting an extensive search involving ship-wide announcements, security camera reviews and the involvement of US and Mexican Coast Guard units, though he is presumed to have died in the ocean.

Gigler, from Redlands, California, had spent his entire 24-year career at software firm Esri and appeared to maintain a happy family life with his wife and three sons aged 13, 11 and 9. His reasons for jumping remain unexplained and no prior warning was given. Whilst a fellow passenger claimed Gigler had mentioned marriage difficulties at the ship's bar the night before, his sister Wendy Dowden rejected this account, insisting the marriage was stable and suggesting instead that her brother may have experienced a sudden psychotic break, despite having no prior history of mental illness.
