Bukayo Saka says England’s players still carry an emotional “scar” from their 2-1 World Cup semi-final defeat by Argentina. Despite winning the bronze-medal match 6-4 against France to secure their best finish in six decades, England remain without a men’s World Cup title since 1966 and are now trying to focus on the new international season.

England will host world champions Spain at Wembley in the first of four Nations League matches over two weeks, with qualification for the knockout stages the immediate objective. Saka also praised 16-year-old Arsenal team-mate Max Dowman, whom he believes could soon receive a senior call-up, although Under-21 manager Lee Carsley says remaining with the under-19s may best support the youngster’s development.
