Alza Festival, America's first microdrama festival launching next month, is set to premiere a diverse slate of vertical storytelling content including an Eric Roberts-starring romantic comedy and modern reimaginings of classic literary works such as Pride and Prejudice, Wuthering Heights and Sherlock Holmes. The festival, run by veterans of Tribeca and TikTok, marks a significant moment for the microdrama format, which originated in Asia but has begun expanding rapidly into the United States market as major entertainment companies recognise its commercial potential.

The festival's lineup encompasses several original series ranging from thrillers and crime dramas to comedy. Key titles include Billionaires' Broken Vow (featuring Oscar-nominee Roberts), The Count (an election-conspiracy thriller by filmmakers Gary and Edmund Entin), Mobking (a resurrected web series), 50 Worst Dates (an improvised comedy), and Zero Point (a psychological thriller with Broadway veterans). The event also showcases international productions, including Denmark's Glaze and Tokyo-set anime Lola. The microdrama genre is projected to generate between $20 billion and $30 billion in annual global revenues by 2030, with investment from major studios including Fox, Cineverse and Access Entertainment.
