Discord is rolling out a global age-verification system that estimates users’ ages and restricts access to age-restricted content when accounts are identified as belonging to teenagers or remain unconfirmed. The revised approach replaces a more privacy-invasive plan after user backlash, intensified by a 2025 breach in which hackers stole government IDs from 70,000 users through a former verification provider.

Users will be placed in adult (18+), teen (13–17) or unconfirmed groups, with teenagers facing safeguards including blurred or blocked sensitive images, restricted messaging and limited profile visibility. Discord expects more than 90% of users will not need to verify their age; those incorrectly classified can use options including credit-card checks, app-store age ranges, Google Wallet age passes or k-ID’s AgeKey, while vendors are required to delete submitted data after verification.
