MariaDB has added vector search to its database, but says AI coding assistants rarely recommend it for new projects. MariaDB Foundation chairman Kaj Arnö argues that developers increasingly follow suggestions from large language models, giving better-known alternatives such as PostgreSQL an advantage and making AI visibility crucial to MariaDB’s growth.

Arnö says outdated training data, documentation and framework defaults may explain why MariaDB is often overlooked, despite AI tools recognising its vector capabilities when directly asked. He compares the challenge with search-engine optimisation, but says genuine adoption, documentation and community use—not attempts to manipulate recommendations—are the proper solution; he also acknowledges wider questions about which features should remain in MariaDB’s community edition.
