Nearly 800 small boat migrants reached Britain on a single day this week, marking the highest daily figure recorded this year. The Home Office confirmed 781 arrivals on Wednesday, exceeding the previous 2026 record of 752 set in July. This development is particularly significant as it directly contradicts Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood's statement from just three weeks earlier that Labour's Channel enforcement tactics were beginning to yield results.

The 781 arrivals represent more than five times the average number of crossings on favourable weather days ("red days") recorded in the first eight months of the year, when daily figures averaged 144. The week saw 1,085 migrants reach Britain across the first three days alone, with operations including ten small boats intercepted mid-Channel and transferred to Dover, as well as two "uncontrolled landings" where migrant boats reached UK shores without being intercepted. One dinghy from Normandy completed a record 38-hour voyage carrying 51 migrants, whilst approximately 30 migrants reached a Kent beach undetected. The surge may indicate that people trafficking gangs have resolved earlier difficulties in obtaining maritime equipment such as dinghies and outboard motors.
