Dark Horse Comics and Wizards of the Coast have announced a new 12-issue comic series titled "Magic: The Gathering: Mage of Zhalfir," which will explore the early years of Teferi Akosa, one of Magic's most significant characters. The series arrives at a particularly fitting moment in the game's history, coinciding with the return of Zhalfir to the storyline through a dedicated set scheduled for October 2027, and provides long-awaited backstory for fans.

The comic follows a young Teferi as he leaves his homeland to study under legendary Planeswalker Urza at Tolarian Academy on Dominaria, learning to master time and space manipulation. Written by acclaimed comic author Ray Fawkes with art by Rapha Lobosco, the first issue launches on 20 January 2027 for $4.99, with the narrative opening in present-day Strixhaven before flashing back to Teferi's recruitment by Urza. Zhalfir was famously phased out of existence by Teferi centuries ago to protect it from invasion, remaining isolated until its return to the Multiverse as an independent plane in 2023's March of the Machine storyline.
