David Gilmour has described Pink Floyd’s 1970 album *Atom Heart Mother* as “dreadful” and possibly the band’s lowest artistic point. The record was made during a difficult transitional period following Syd Barrett’s departure, when the group had ambitious ideas but lacked the confidence and direction to execute them fully.

The album was the final Pink Floyd release produced by Norman Smith, whose departure reflected the band’s dissatisfaction with the project. Collaborator Ron Geesin helped shape the title track despite not being a Pink Floyd fan, while Roger Waters later said no amount of money would persuade him to repeat the recording process. Although Gilmour and Waters remembered its creation bleakly, the album helped push the band towards a more productive and distinctive future.
