Steven Comisar, a 64-year-old Ohio podcaster who built a reputation by promoting himself as a reformed fraudster, has been charged by the FBI with perpetrating a $7 million scam against an Ohio couple. The charges expose the contradiction at the heart of his recent podcast venture, "Scam Junkie," launched in 2023, wherein he claimed to have transformed his life after five federal convictions and more than 22 years in prison. This case is significant because it demonstrates the persistent danger posed by habitual fraudsters and raises troubling questions about credibility in the true crime media sphere.

According to FBI court records, Comisar employed multiple fabricated personas—including company CEOs, investors, a wealth director, an attorney and a purported billionaire—to persuade the Massillon couple to invest in projects he falsely promised would yield substantial returns. Between 2019 and July 2026, the couple remitted 70 cashier's cheques ranging from $7,000 to $300,000, with the total fraud exceeding $7 million. Comisar allegedly used the money for gambling, hotel expenses and personal consumption, and was apprehended in California residing at a Beverly Hills Marriott, where the FBI located him through Amazon and FedEx package deliveries to his hotel room.
