Darializa Avila Chevalier, the Democratic nominee for New York’s 13th Congressional District, said she was arrested during a protest against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s appearance at the United Nations. The demonstration, organised by Jewish Voice for Peace and other progressive groups, opposed the Gaza war and US military support for Israel, highlighting Chevalier’s anti-war political platform.

At least 30 people were detained after protesters blocked a road near the UN, while reports estimated around 250 participants. Actress Susan Sarandon, council member Chi Ossé and whistleblower Chelsea Manning were also detained; the protest took place amid debate over an International Criminal Court arrest warrant for Netanyahu, which Israel rejects and the US says will not be enforced on its soil. Chevalier, a self-described Democratic Socialist, recently defeated a five-term incumbent in the Democratic primary.
