Jimmy Friesenhahn, a Marine combat veteran, was shot and left paralysed whilst working as a security guard at El Patio Sports Bar in San Antonio on 4 May 2025. He was scheduled to testify next week against Wilmer Vladimir Ruiz Ortega, 29, a Honduran national accused of shooting him, but a serious health setback—a blood clot complication following August surgery—has hospitalised him and may prevent him from appearing in court. The case has drawn attention to questions about the criminal justice system's handling of individuals with repeated offences and pending immigration cases.

The shooting left Friesenhahn paralysed, unable to speak and requiring full-time medical care after being struck twice in his bulletproof vest and once in the neck. Ortega has been charged with aggravated assault against a security officer and illegal entry into the United States. Court records show Ortega had been arrested multiple times—for driving whilst intoxicated (October 2020), probation violation (August 2023), and failing to appear in court (including November 2024)—yet remained free on bond. Friesenhahn's family has criticised authorities for not complying with removal orders and turning him over to Immigration and Customs Enforcement between his March 2025 court appearance and the May shooting.
