A California homeowner discovered human remains beneath his Big Bear house in 2020, unknowingly helping to resolve the disappearance and suspected murder of Jill Maiorca, who was 29 when she died. DNA testing confirmed her identity in 2023, and investigators subsequently identified her former husband, Jeff Maiorca, as a suspect.

Authorities believe Jill was murdered in November 2006, although she was not reported missing until the following year. Jeff Maiorca, 53, was arrested at a Big Bear library and charged with murder and use of a deadly weapon; he is being held without bail and is due back in court on 12 October, while the investigation continues.
