California climber Zubayir Kazi, 24, survived a roughly 500-foot slide while descending Mount Shasta after reaching its summit during his first icy summit attempt. Seriously injured and separated from his food, water, phone and light, he crawled through the night because he believed staying put could be fatal, highlighting the dangers of glissading and climbing alone.

Kazi suffered deep cuts, foot injuries, skin and nerve damage, and serious internal complications. After reaching Horse Camp Cabin, he was found by another hiker the next day and given food and water before rescuers arrived; officials said he might have died within hours. The Forest Service urged climbers to carry backup electronics, allow sufficient daylight, prepare to self-rescue and share their plans.
