YouTube and Meta Reverse Course, Will Accept ‘Musk’ Trailer Ad

The Hollywood Reporter · 1 hour ago

YouTube and Meta have reversed decisions to reject a paid trailer advert for Alex Gibney’s documentary Musk, following criticism that the platforms were suppressing material about Elon Musk. YouTube said its restriction was temporary and cleared the advert after review, while Meta described its rejection as an error and said the adverts would be restored.

The trailer was released ahead of the film’s 9 October cinema release, but Bleecker Street had initially been unable to advertise it on YouTube, Meta, TikTok or X. TikTok and X have not changed their positions, while the platforms appeared to object to footage of Musk at a 2024 Donald Trump rally, despite the trailer not being a conventional campaign advert. The film examines Musk’s businesses, political influence and role in shaping discourse on X.

  • YouTube and Meta will now allow the Musk documentary trailer advert.
  • Both platforms initially rejected the advert, citing internal review issues.
  • TikTok and X continue not to run it.
