A video of Israel’s UN ambassador, Danny Danon, offering a Starlink device to an Iranian representative has attracted about nine million views across social media. Israeli officials said the video’s reach in Iran was unusual and significant because it conveyed a message supporting internet access and freedom of expression for Iranians.

Instagram analytics indicated that 39.9% of viewers were in Iran, compared with 14.3% in the United States and 12.6% in Israel. Danon made the offer after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu displayed a Starlink device during a UN speech; the Iranian representative declined it. Israeli officials also accused accounts they believed to be Iranian of recirculating an old video involving former ambassador Gilad Erdan, describing this as an effort to counter the attention generated by Danon’s video.
