Severe flash flooding has struck Bangkok, Thailand following heavy rainfall over the weekend, with the city declared a disaster zone by authorities. The flooding poses significant risks to residents' lives and property, prompting Australia's Smartraveller service to issue heightened travel warnings for Australians visiting the country.

Nearly 300mm of rain inundated Bangkok, leaving large parts of the capital underwater with vehicles stranded and residents wading through waist-high water. Over 4,000 people have sought refuge in more than 200 emergency shelters established across the city, whilst the Thai army has deployed to assist with relief efforts including field kitchens and shelter provision. The flooding threatens to disrupt flights, roads, power supplies and telecommunications services, and Smartraveller has advised travellers to monitor weather conditions, follow local authorities' guidance and avoid affected areas. Additionally, Australians have been warned to avoid areas within 10 kilometres of the Thailand-Cambodia border in seven provinces due to ongoing security concerns involving armed clashes and landmines.
