Republican Georgia Senate nominee Mike Collins faced an awkward confrontation at a press event over the weekend when challenged about an ongoing ethics investigation into his office. Senate Republican Leader John Thune, visiting Georgia to fundraise for Collins, uncomfortably deflected a reporter's question about the investigation, whilst Collins subsequently dismissed it as a "nothingburger." The investigation concerns allegations that his former chief of staff used congressional resources to hire his much younger girlfriend for a no-show position—claims Collins has called meritless.

The controversies threatening Collins' campaign extend beyond the ethics investigation. His son-in-law, David Alan Scheer II, has been reported by the Daily Mail to have promoted white nationalist ideology, antisemitic conspiracy theories and Nazi imagery on social media, including calls for Muslim deportation. Additionally, a former intern for Collins was photographed in KKK garb. These mounting scandals have coincided with a significant fundraising disadvantage: whilst Democratic incumbent Jon Ossoff has raised nearly £98 million this cycle, Collins has raised approximately £7.4 million, with only £2.08 million in cash reserves as of June. A YouGov poll from mid-September showed Ossoff leading by 10 points, with 52 per cent support compared to Collins' 42 per cent.
