‘We Want to Find a Way’: SEGA Eager to Bring Sakura Wars Games to Modern Consoles

Push Square · 3 hours ago

SEGA producer Akira Nishino has stated that the company wants to bring classic Sakura Wars games to modern consoles, acknowledging that the series' original titles are currently difficult to access without emulators and fan translations. Whilst the publisher is keen to make these games available to contemporary players, Nishino indicated that various unspecified challenges—likely including the expense and complexity of translating text-dense titles that blend visual novels, dating sims and tactical RPGs—are preventing easy progress on the matter. This announcement comes as the franchise approaches its 30th anniversary, with SEGA planning special celebrations and teasing an undisclosed major project.

The Sakura Wars series consists of six main entries, with the most recent instalment, New Sakura Wars, launching on PS4 in 2020. Western audiences remained largely unfamiliar with the franchise until 2010, when Sakura Wars: So Long, My Love was localised for PS2—a decade after its original 2005 Japanese release. Meanwhile, franchise creator Oji Hiroi revealed he has written a scenario for a potential new game following discussions about development, though he clarified that such ideas do not necessarily indicate active production. SEGA is marking the milestone with pop-up shops and stage shows in Japan, whilst the nature of the aforementioned "something else big" remains unconfirmed.
