Too early to say who was behind Dubai-Tel Aviv flight attack, Israeli PM says

BBC World · 2 hours ago

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says it is too early to determine why a co-pilot allegedly stabbed the pilot of a Flydubai flight and tried to crash the aircraft. The plane, carrying 174 people from Dubai to Tel Aviv, landed safely in Saudi Arabia after passengers and crew overpowered the attacker; authorities have not established a motive or confirmed any link to Iran.

The flight made an emergency landing in Tabuk, north-western Saudi Arabia, where the alleged attacker was arrested and is being investigated. Flight-tracking data recorded a descent of more than 17,000 feet in under two minutes, followed by emergency and hijacking signals. The stabbed pilot, Indian national Captain Smit Machchhar, is in a stable condition, and the passengers later continued to Tel Aviv on a repatriation flight.

  • Netanyahu says the motive and any Iranian link remain unclear.
  • Passengers and crew stopped an alleged attempt to crash the plane.
  • The injured pilot is stable; the aircraft landed safely in Saudi Arabia.
