Mayor Mamdani and Nas Have a Heart to Heart About Keeping NYC the Home of Hip Hop
New York mayor Zohran Mamdani, a former rapper himself, met with hip hop icon Nas at Queensbridge Park to discuss preserving New York City's role as hip hop's cultural home. Mamdani emphasised that whilst NYC gave birth to hip hop over 50 years ago, rising costs of living are pushing out the artists who created this culture, and the city must take action to ensure artists can afford to live and create there.
During the conversation, Nas underscored hip hop's power as a truth-telling art form that documents urban realities and speaks for communities demanding change. Mamdani also visited the Bronx School of Hip Hop, a grades 9–12 institution in District Nine that integrates hip hop culture with rigorous academic instruction, including emceeing, DJing, graffiti, breaking, audio production, and financial literacy alongside standard curriculum.
