Barbershop began as a 2002 film about Calvin’s, a barbershop in Chicago, and the people who work and gather there. The shop is more than a place for haircuts: its regulars talk, joke and share views about life and their neighbourhood.

In the series, Jermaine Fowler plays Travis “Trav” Porter, who takes over the shop and tries to carry on the legacy of his grandfather Eddie. The story follows Trav and the barbers around him as they build their relationships and keep the shop going.

The series brings the film franchise’s setting and characters into a new format, with Marshall Todd, a co-writer of the original film, involved as a writer and co-showrunner. Its focus on a local business as a community meeting place gives the story a wider view of the people connected to it.
