The Super League is the top division of rugby league in England, with clubs playing a regular season before a play-off series decides the champion. The Grand Final is the last match of those play-offs, and winning it brings the league title.

Wakefield Trinity and Warrington Wolves are established rugby league clubs in northern England. Wakefield had been in the second-tier Championship two years earlier, so reaching the top division’s final marked a rapid change in the club’s fortunes.

Wakefield’s previous English title was in 1968, before the Super League era began. Only a small group of clubs have won the Super League, making the title a significant milestone in the competition’s history.
