I clawed my way to the top but need a break – Azpilicueta
César Azpilicueta says he has retired from football because he no longer had the energy to commit fully to a season, and wants time for his family and to enjoy life. The former Chelsea captain says his education and drive to keep learning helped him handle pressure, adapt on the pitch and take on leadership responsibilities at the club.
Azpilicueta made 508 appearances for Chelsea over 11 years, ranking sixth in the club’s all-time list, after joining from Marseille in 2012 for £7 million. He studied for an MBA while playing, later earned qualifications from Harvard Business School and the PFA Business School, and recalls studying before Chelsea’s 2021 Champions League final win over Manchester City. After beginning his career at Osasuna, he played his final season at Sevilla; he says he may consider a future role as a sporting director, but needs a break first.
