Charity tea room may close despite Ludwig filming

BBC Entertainment ·

Liberty Tea Rooms and Community Hub in Hemel Hempstead faces permanent closure unless it raises £25,000 by the end of October. The volunteer-run charity has been temporarily shut whilst its premises are used to film the third series of David Mitchell's comedy Ludwig, with the building's frontage transformed to resemble a bank. Despite receiving filming fees during this critical period, trustees said the charity is in an "extremely low cash position" and would not survive without immediate fundraising.

The tea room, housed in a building that originally functioned as a bank before becoming a community venue, has been closed between 15 September and 7 October for filming, with production crews continuing work inside and outside for several weeks. Beyond serving tea and refreshments, Liberty Tea Rooms provides community members facing difficulty with debt advice and food bank parcels, according to Mark Kitson, chairman of the trustees. The production team has committed to restoring the venue once filming concludes, including repairing a broken window and updating signage.

The trustees have said that despite receiving income from the filming production, the charity remains in an extremely low cash position. Without securing the necessary funds, the volunteer-run organisation will be unable to continue operating.
