Watch Charli XCX ‘Brat’ artwork designer talk through design process and evolution

NME · 2 days ago

Brent David Freaney, the designer behind Charli XCX's 'Brat' album cover, has discussed the creative philosophy that shaped the 2024 album's distinctive look. Speaking at a San Francisco conference, Freaney explained that the project was guided by the concept of 'death of the finished state'—exploring when a work is truly complete. He shared early drafts showing different typefaces and colour variations, emphasising that design iterations are about exploration and defining boundaries rather than necessarily moving toward perfection.

The final blurred green 'Brat' cover, which won Best Recording Package at the 2025 Grammys, unexpectedly emerged from an export error involving a low-resolution screenshot. Despite initial uncertainty about the album's potential impact, Freaney focused on achieving a design Charli XCX felt authentically represented her work. The simple green artwork ultimately became one of the most recognisable album covers of the decade, and Freaney's creative partnership with XCX continues on her upcoming album 'Music, Fashion, Film', scheduled for release in July 2026.
