New bike lanes and pavements on Charter Row in Sheffield city centre to make walking and wheeling easier
Sheffield City Council is beginning construction on enhanced cycling and pedestrian infrastructure in the city centre, adding protected bike lanes and upgraded pavements to Charter Row and Moore Street. The work will introduce a two-way cycle route on one side of Charter Row with a one-way route opposite, whilst Moore Street will see existing painted bike lanes replaced with fully segregated tracks on both sides. The project also includes landscaping improvements and a new signalised crossing at Fitzwilliam Gate.
Construction is scheduled to start with two weeks of overnight work to reduce traffic disruption, followed by daytime operations. The improvements are part of the Connecting Sheffield initiative, which aims to expand accessible walking and cycling routes through the city core by linking with new infrastructure on Pinstone and Surrey streets. Council officials present the project as enhancing street quality and offering residents additional sustainable transport choices.
